Last night Lifetime premiered the first in a miniseries based on the best-selling book The Red Tent. I was urged by my Mom a few years to read the book, and I did. I was then urged by friends in our book club to read the book, and I read it again. I loved the book and can’t wait to watch the miniseries. Based on the story of Jacob and his wives in the Old Testament, it stars Minnie Driver as Leah, the main character Dinah’s mother. Dinah’s is Jacob’s daughter, and is one of the most prominent figures in the Old Testament. Morena Baccarin (of Homeland) stars as Rachel, Jacob’s more prominent wife.
The Red Tent refers to a tent where women of their clan are to go during the delivery of their children, their recovery afterwards, and their monthly menses. What developed between these women was an incredible bond. The story focuses on Dinah’s young life, and her development as a woman, and her dreams of serving as a midwife. If you loved the book and want to watch, part 1 will re-air before part 2 tonight on Lifetime, beginning at 7pm. If you haven’t read the book – you can still watch, and I promise you if you do, you will want to read the book too!
